Annulus devLog8 - NEW UPDATE
Hello all! Following the release of the first update to Annulus, I wanted to show some footage of the last things that got put into the game.
Environmental obstacles:
I needed a way of ensuring the player gets more opportunities to have and use the Fuses, so I made the security drones lock the elevators until they are destroyed. The large Ghost heads also lock the generators and have to be killed before turning the lights on. Lastly the generators can now require up to 4 Fuses to activate. Along with new enemy locks, I created moving platforms and laser doors that are active when the power is on, but can also be deactivated when a nearby lock is overridden with the Overcharge ability.
Boss battle:
The Boss battle started as the same boss from my other game Big Fish. I used similar code, but went about creating the weak spots differently. Now instead of attacking the tail, the boss has five shielded body segments that can be destroyed with charge shots. I also used the environment more. There are spinning wheels that get powered by the boss and generate an electrical blast and also platforms that orbit the arena. I really enjoy this boss fight. I had considered making the body segments vulnerable to the sword, but it made the fight too easy. The head can still be stunned with a good hit by the sword.
Level design:
The first areas of the Annulus area designed to lead passengers into a linear processing center before reaching the central hub of the ship. The hub will let passengers travel around quickly without getting lost. Damage and lack of power has shut off this area to only a few paths. This second area is supposed to let the player feel like the world is opening up more, without really letting the player get too lost. The next update with include multiple areas to explore.
Thank you all for being patient. This update took longer than I expected, but I would rather have a good product get released than let everyone play something with bugs, problems, or lack of fluidity and conveyance. Enjoy the game!
