Big Fish - How I art

Today I want to talk about something a little different..

The video shows me playing around with colors for a flower I'm working on. The flower holds an ability. I then work on introducing the Gate to the Tadpole just after getting an ability. These gates are everywhere now and I have done a lot of level redesigning to get the flow of the game better.

Now that we have that out of the way I wanted to talk about a big question I've had lately: "Why do we do art".

After my journeys through the world of festivals, artists, and musicians, (I lead a very unique life) I've come to a bunch of answers and even more questions, but only through my own experiences have I really found my answers and methods to being an artist.

When we create art, we have this idea in our minds as to what we want to create. The problem is we are almost always limited in some way and cannot achieve the exact thing that we are envisioning. I call this a "limiter". It's these limiters, however that force us to be more creative than we originally would have. It may be bold to say, but I think the best art was made with the most limits, because it required the most creativity.

This is where the "Why" comes in:

Limits don't just force art out of us, though. We have to come to accept the thing that we are creating. We have to stop living in our imaginative and perfect future and we can't bother with regretting the past. We instead have to live completely in the present and live with whatever it is that we are creating. The art is that middle ground between what we want to make and what we are actually making. It is the acceptance of that art in the present that makes it art. Accepting something of our own making and living fully in the preset is so healthy for us as humans.

Creating and accepting our own art is therapeutic and thus concludes my question as to why we do art.

I hope you enjoy the art I create.
